In Memoriam (Chavan Scruggs) — March 19, 2005 – September 6, 2021 Chavan Scruggs was a beloved high school sophomore from Mobile, Alabama, whose zest for life and boundless energy touched everyone around him. An avid football player who excelled on the field, Chavan also worked part-time at Cramer Barrel, sharing his reliable smile and unwavering work ethic with the people he met. He loved sports, family, and friends, and his warmth, humor, and outgoing spirit made him a bright light in his community. His loss sent a shock through his city, affecting his school and neighborhood, and leaving a lasting imprint on all who knew him. He is deeply missed by his family and friends, whose memories of his kindness and joy continue to inspire our work. In his memory and in steadfast commitment to a safer community, Chavan Scruggs Way now stands on Allison Street in Mobile, honoring the beloved son, brother, and friend whose light continues to guide us. On March 17, 2026, Mobile will recognize Chavan Scruggs’ birthday by proclaiming March 19 as Chavan Scruggs Day in the City of Mobile, a lasting reminder of the precious life cut short and the urgent work to prevent gun violence.
